2023 Terrason Swallowfield Pinot Noir
Swallowfield Vineyard Gembrook
Around 260m above sea level, surrounded by forest on all sides, strewn with granite and quartz, which protrude like enormous prehistoric boulders in certain areas. Swallowfield is one of the most beautiful vineyards in Australia.
Thirty-year-old MV6 Pinot Noir from Swallowfield’s Block One. Granite and quartz soils, sitting at 300 metres above sea level. Amongst the most southern vineyards in the Upper Yarra Valley. The season gave us around 2.0 tonnes per acre - perfect for Pinot Noir. We reduced the whole cluster to as bunches were small, but the stems were a little green. This allowed longer time in cuve with fewer punch downs but more remontage (wetting of the cap). Ten months in oak with malo-lactic fermentation only starting in December. An age-worthy Pinot Noir that can comfortably be cellared for a decade.Delicate harmonious aromatics, cherry, red fruits, and spice.
Medium bodied palate with fine tannins, good depth and a finish that lingers.
REVIEW
Made from 30-year-old MV6 pinot noir from Swallowfield's block 1 in Gembrook; 50% whole bunches. A medium, bright purple. An engaging bouquet with its scents of spiced red cherries, Gravenstein apples and potpourri. Medium bodied and gently sappy, this is firmer than the '22 of the same wine and will take a little longer to unfurl. The wait will be worth it. 94 Points P Rich Wine Companion
