2021 Domaine Philippe Robert Marsannay Champs Perdrix
2021 Domaine Philippe Robert Marsannay Champs Perdrix
One of the most exciting Burgundy Domaines, especially in regard to quality to price ratio that we have seen in Australia. Made by Philippe and Johann Robert and with close family connections to the revered Domaine Armand Rousseau who I first worked with in 2008.
2021 Harvest
The 2021 growing season was considered challenging, although I tend to think it is just a return to a more classic Burgundian harvest. The Cote de Nuits fared much better than the Cote de Beaune and from what I have seen so far, the wines show an elegance and fragrance that perhaps has been missing in the trio of warm years (2018, 2019 and 2020). Instead of the riper fruit aromatics we have become accustomed to, we see more floral and terroir-driven notes. The use of whole bunch was much more conservative at the Domaine this year as was extraction, what we are seeing is aromatics that will become more complex and leafy with a little bit of age. All three wines are silky, and elegant with balanced acidity. Overall, this trio of reds will be approachable now and over the next decade.
100% de-stemmed Pinot Noir from a 1.1 acre vineyard. Champs Perdrix is the iconic vineyard of Marsannay. Sitting at the top of the village backing right up to the combe and surrounded by pine forest. Elevation is around 390 metres above sea level on thin rocky soils over almost pure limestone. Thirty five year old vines, hand picked, five day cold soak followed by a long slow fermentation in old concrete open fermenters, pressed to Burgundy tonneau of which around 30% are new. The wine then spends 18 months in barrel before being assembled for bottling. A wine of wonderful colour, great balance and a mineral element due to the limestone influence. Unique Burgundy.
